Maru - the male Scottish Fold cat from Japan (まる, Japanese: circle or round) was born on May 24th, 2007. His anonymous owner first launched "I am Maru" blog in November 2007. The official YouTube channel featuring Maru’s daily adventures in short video format was created by mugumogu in July 2008.  Many of the videos are very popular and have millions of views. In August 2009, Entertainment Weekly listed the video channel in its “Notable Kitty Videos” article, alongside Keyboard Cat and Nora the Piano Cat.
In 2008 and 2009, Maru won YouTube Japan’s video awards in the Pet / Animal category for two consecutive years.

Maru is always excited to enter every box he sees. Artist Elena Khomoutova believes that this beautiful being came to the world to deliver some messages to us, humans. Many of us use to look out from the mental “box” that we created for ourselves. Maru is showing that there is a way to see life from a different perspective. If we try to look inside the “box” (within) we can find a truth about our life’s purpose and ourselves. Maru doesn’t change his cat nature to please people. He is always ready to play and have a fun. He gives us a very good example how to be authentic, happy, live in the moment and be open for new ways. Elena created the painting "Secret of the Cosmic Box" to inspire people to be open for new opportunities and energies.
